Spirit of Gravity, Marlborough Theatre, Brighton, Tuesday 20th June

This was the month we took on the world cup and held it to a fiercely competitive draw. With a pub full of football crazed women cheering downstairs it was easy to catch the action replays anyway.

Rashamon
Kicking off with a lengthy and slightly revamped "Mates to some pilgrim" Lee set the pace for the evening. Squirreled quietly away at the back of the stage half hidden, Lee played the Kaoss pad with his melodica, in the meantime his music strutted around the front showing off its tattoos and scowling at the early risers, fierce and raucous. After that scary opener we had some new songs from upcoming releases, featuring thicker synthesiser sounds and less intimidating drums than we're used to from Rashamon.

Lifting Gear Engineer
Rob from the Valleys was the special guest for the evening, and he carried on the beat rush for the evening, skipping bass drum patters all around the beat and Detroit detuned whispers all around the tunes, we were wishing for a dancefloor and much bigger speakers. Marvellous, delirious stuff, I don't think his myspace does justice to what he can do. An absolute belter.

Multiplex
The Dorman Brothers set up to the right, the Centre was occupied by a drummer, the left a quarter screen capturing elements of what was being projected over the stage. Keeping the beats alive but with real drums they just built on what Lifting Gear Engineer had done, lifting us up onto another level. Beautiful and driving stuff, we had some bass humming through the whole building at times, some programmed beats and the live drums thricking and clacking over the top. They played lots of new tracks, a couple of old ones, but no "Always Within You", even though they did treat us to a little vocodor action.
